The Role of Microbial Diversity in Lignocellulosic Biomass Degradation: A Biotechnological Perspective

AbstractLignocellulosic biomass, such as plant residues and agricultural waste, holds immense potential as a renewable resource for the production of biofuels, chemicals, and animal feed. However, the efficient degradation of lignocellulose into fermentable sugars remains a significant challenge. Recent research has highlighted the critical role of microbial diversity in lignocellulosic biomass degradation, offering new insights from a biotechnological perspective. The comprehension and utilization of microbial diversity are crucial for developing efficient biotechnological strategies for lignocellulosic biomass degradation. By uncovering the intricate relationships between microbial communities and their enzymatic machinery, researchers can optimize degradation processes, enhance biofuel production, and contribute to a more sustainable bio‐based economy. Microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and archaea, possess diverse enzymatic capabilities, allowing them to secrete a plethora of lignocellulolytic enzymes. Microbial organisms inhabiting extreme environments, such as the rumen, hot and cold springs, deep sea trenches, and acidic and alkaline pH environments, exhibit significant potential in generating enzymes, including hemicellulolytic and lignocellulolytic enzymes, which possess superior biochemical properties essential for industrial bioconversion applications. This review explores the ability of lignocellulosic enzymes from microbial sources to efficiently break down the lignocellulosic biomass and their potential applications in industrial biotechnology.

Direct Degradation of Fresh and Dried Macroalgae by Agarivorans albus B2Z047

Marine macroalgae are increasingly recognized for their significant biological and economic potential. The key to unlocking this potential lies in the efficient degradation of all carbohydrates from the macroalgae biomass. However, a variety of polysaccharides (alginate, cellulose, fucoidan, and laminarin), are difficult to degrade simultaneously in a short time. In this study, the brown alga Saccharina japonica was found to be rapidly and thoroughly degraded by the marine bacterium Agarivorans albus B2Z047. This strain harbors a broad spectrum of carbohydrate-active enzymes capable of degrading various polysaccharides, making it uniquely equipped to efficiently break down both fresh and dried kelp, achieving a hydrolysis rate of up to 52%. A transcriptomic analysis elucidated the presence of pivotal enzyme genes implicated in the degradation pathways of alginate, cellulose, fucoidan, and laminarin. This discovery highlights the bacterium’s capability for the efficient and comprehensive conversion of kelp biomass, indicating its significant potential in biotechnological applications for macroalgae resource utilization.

Insights into Early Phases of Phycocyanin Crystal Formation via SONICC Spectroscopy

This research delves into the early nucleation stages of phycocyanin, a protein pivotal for its fluorescent properties and crystalline stability and holding considerable potential for biotechnological applications. The paper contrasts traditional crystallization methods with the innovative Langmuir–Blodgett nanotemplate approach, aiming to enhance molecular assembly and nucleation processes. The study employs Langmuir–Blodgett nanotemplates alongside second-order nonlinear imaging of chiral crystal (SONICC) spectroscopy. This combination is designed to orderly organize phycocyanin molecules and provide a sensitive visualization of early-stage crystal formation, capturing the intricate dynamics of protein crystallization. The experiments were conducted under controlled conditions, where surface pressure was maintained at 26 mN/m and barrier speed at 70 cm/min to optimize the monolayer formation at the air–water interface. The Langmuir–Blodgett method, compared to traditional vapor diffusion techniques, shows improvements in the uniformity and efficiency of nucleation. The sensitivity of SONICC spectroscopy significantly enhances the visualization of the nucleation process, revealing a more structured and uniform crystalline assembly in the early stages of formation. This method demonstrates a substantial improvement in nucleation dynamics, leading to a more orderly growth process and potentially larger, well-ordered crystals. Integrating Langmuir–Blodgett nanotemplates with SONICC spectroscopy offers a significant step in understanding protein crystallization processes with insights into the nucleation and growth of protein crystals and broad implications for refining crystallography methodologies of protein-based biomaterials, contributing to the advancement of structural biology and materials science.

In silico biotechnological potential of Bacillus sp. strain MHSD_37 bacterial endophyte

BackgroundEndophytic bacteria possess a range of unique characteristics that enable them to successfully interact with their host and survive in adverse environments. This study employed in silico analysis to identify genes, from Bacillus sp. strain MHSD_37, with potential biotechnological applications.ResultsThe strain presented several endophytic lifestyle genes which encode for motility, quorum sensing, stress response, desiccation tolerance and root colonisation. The presence of plant growth promoting genes such as those involved in nitrogen fixation, nitrate assimilation, siderophores synthesis, seed germination and promotion of root nodule symbionts, was detected. Strain MHSD_37 also possessed genes involved in insect virulence and evasion of defence system. The genome analysis also identified the presence of genes involved in heavy metal tolerance, xenobiotic resistance, and the synthesis of siderophores involved in heavy metal tolerance. Furthermore, LC-MS analysis of the excretome identified secondary metabolites with biological activities such as anti-cancer, antimicrobial and applications as surfactants.ConclusionsStrain MHSD_37 thereby demonstrated potential biotechnological application in bioremediation, biofertilisation and biocontrol. Moreover, the strain presented genes encoding products with potential novel application in bio-nanotechnology and pharmaceuticals.

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy for the Sensing of the Kinetic Parameters of Engineered Enzymes.

The study presents a promising approach to enzymatic kinetics using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) to assess fundamental parameters of modified enteropeptidases. Traditional methods for determining these parameters, while effective, often lack versatility and convenience, especially under varying environmental conditions. The use of EIS provides a novel approach that overcomes these limitations. The enteropeptidase underwent genetic modification through the introduction of single amino acid modifications to assess their effect on enzyme kinetics. However, according to the one-sample t-test results, the difference between the engineered enzymes and hEKL was not statistically significant by conventional criteria. The kinetic parameters were analyzed using fluorescence spectroscopy and EIS, which was found to be an effective tool for the real-time measurement of enzyme kinetics. The results obtained through EIS were not significantly different from those obtained through traditional fluorescence spectroscopy methods (p value >> 0.05). The study validates the use of EIS for measuring enzyme kinetics and provides insight into the effects of specific amino acid changes on enteropeptidase function. These findings have potential applications in biotechnology and biochemical research, suggesting a new method for rapidly assessing enzymatic activity.

Optogenetic Control of Bacterial Cell-Cell Adhesion Dynamics: Unraveling the Influence on Biofilm Architecture and Functionality.

The transition of bacteria from an individualistic to a biofilm lifestyle profoundly alters their biology. During biofilm development, the bacterial cell-cell adhesions are a major determinant of initial microcolonies, which serve as kernels for the subsequent microscopic and mesoscopic structure of the biofilm, and determine the resulting functionality. In this study, the significance of bacterial cell-cell adhesion dynamics on bacterial aggregation and biofilm maturation is elucidated. Using photoswitchable adhesins between bacteria, modifying the dynamics of bacterial cell-cell adhesions with periodic dark-light cycles is systematic. Dynamic cell-cell adhesions with liquid-like behavior improve bacterial aggregation and produce more compact microcolonies than static adhesions with solid-like behavior in both experiments and individual-based simulations. Consequently, dynamic cell-cell adhesions give rise to earlier quorum sensing activation, better intermixing of different bacterial populations, improved biofilm maturation, changes in the growth of cocultures, and higher yields in fermentation. The here presented approach of tuning bacterial cell-cell adhesion dynamics opens the door for regulating the structure and function of biofilms and cocultures with potential biotechnological applications.

Genomic and physiological characterization of Kitasatospora sp. nov., an actinobacterium with potential for biotechnological application isolated from Cerrado soil.

An Actinobacteria - Kitasatospora sp. K002 - was isolated from the soil of Cerrado, a savanna-like Brazilian biome. Herein, we conducted a phylogenetic, phenotypic and physiological characterization, revealing its potential for biotechnological applications. Kitasatospora sp. K002 is an aerobic, non-motile, Gram-positive bacteria that forms grayish-white mycelium on solid cultures and submerged spores with vegetative mycelia on liquid cultures. The strain showed antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Genomic analysis indicated that Kitasatospora xanthocidica JCM 4862 is the closest strain to K002, with a dDDH of 32.8-37.8% and an ANI of 86.86% and the pangenome investigations identified a high number of rare genes. A total of 60 gene clusters of 22 different types were detected by AntiSMASH, and 22 gene clusters showed low similarity (< 10%) with known compounds, which suggests the potential production of novel bioactive compounds. In addition, phylogenetic analysis and morphophysiological characterization clearly distinguished Kitasatospora sp. K002 from other related species. Therefore, we propose that Kitasatospora sp. K002 should be recognized as a new species of the genus Kitasatospora - Kitasatospora brasiliensis sp. nov. (type strains = K002).

Screening of Microalgae for Bioactivity with Antiviral, Antibacterial, Anti-Inflammatory and Anti-Cancer Assays.

Marine microalgae are a rich reservoir of natural compounds, including bioactives. Nonetheless, these organisms remain fairly unexplored despite their potential biotechnological applications. Culture collections with diverse taxonomic groups and lifestyles are a good source to unlock this potential and discover new molecules for multiple applications such as the treatment of human pathologies or the production of aquaculture species. In the present work extracts from thirty-three strains (including twenty dinoflagellates, four diatoms and nine strains from seven other algal classes), cultivated under identical conditions, were examined for their antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activities. Among these, antiviral and anti-inflammatory activities were detected in a few strains while the antibacterial tests showed positive results in most assays. In turn, most trials did not show any anti-cancer activity. Significant differences were observed between species within the same class, in particular dinoflagellates, which were better represented in this study. These preliminary findings pave the way for an in-depth characterization of the extracts with highest signals in each test, the identification of the compounds responsible for the biological activities found and a further screening of the CCVIEO culture collection.

Mechanisms used for cDNA synthesis and site-specific integration of RNA into DNA genomes by a reverse transcriptase-Cas1 fusion protein.

Reverse transcriptase-Cas1 (RT-Cas1) fusion proteins found in some CRISPR systems enable spacer acquisition from both RNA and DNA, but the mechanism of RNA spacer acquisition has remained unclear. Here, we found that Marinomonas mediterranea RT-Cas1/Cas2 adds short 3'-DNA (dN) tails to RNA protospacers, enabling their direct integration into CRISPR arrays as 3'-dN-RNAs or 3'-dN-RNA/cDNA duplexes at rates comparable to similarly configured DNAs. Reverse transcription of RNA protospacers is initiated at 3' proximal sites by multiple mechanisms, including recently described de novo initiation, protein priming with any dNTP, and use of short exogenous or synthesized DNA oligomer primers, enabling synthesis of near full-length cDNAs of diverse RNAs without fixed sequence requirements. The integration of 3'-dN-RNAs or single-stranded DNAs (ssDNAs) is favored over duplexes at higher protospacer concentrations, potentially relevant to spacer acquisition from abundant pathogen RNAs or ssDNA fragments generated by phage defense nucleases. Our findings reveal mechanisms for site-specifically integrating RNA into DNA genomes with potential biotechnological applications.

Edodin: A New Type of Toxin from Shiitake Mushroom (Lentinula edodes) That Inactivates Mammalian Ribosomes.

Ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs) are a group of proteins with rRNA N-glycosylase activity that irreversibly inhibit protein synthesis and consequently cause cell death. Recently, an RIP called ledodin has been found in shiitake; it is cytotoxic, strongly inhibits protein synthesis, and shows rRNA N-glycosylase activity. In this work, we isolated and characterized a 50 kDa cytotoxic protein from shiitake that we named edodin. Edodin inhibits protein synthesis in a mammalian cell-free system, but not in insect-, yeast-, and bacteria-derived systems. It exhibits rRNA N-glycosylase and DNA-nicking activities, which relate it to plant RIPs. It was also shown to be toxic to HeLa and COLO 320 cells. Its structure is not related to other RIPs found in plants, bacteria, or fungi, but, instead, it presents the characteristic structure of the fold type I of pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzymes. Homologous sequences have been found in other fungi of the class Agaricomycetes; thus, edodin could be a new type of toxin present in many fungi, some of them edible, which makes them of great interest in health, both for their involvement in food safety and for their potential biomedical and biotechnological applications.

Characterization of Solitalea canadensis α-mannosidase with specific activity towards α1,3-Mannosidic linkages

A recombinant exo-α-mannosidase from Solitalea canadensis (Sc3Man) has been characterized to exhibit strict specificity for hydrolyzing α1,3-mannosidic linkages located at the non-reducing end of glycans containing α-mannose. Enzymatic characterization revealed that Sc3Man operates optimally at a pH of 5.0 and at a temperature of 37 °C. The enzymatic activity was notably enhanced twofold in the presence of Ca2+ ions, emphasizing its potential dependency on this metal ion, while Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions notably impaired enzyme function. Sc3Man was able to efficiently cleave the terminal α1,3 mannose residue from various high-mannose N-glycan structures and from the model glycoprotein RNase B. This work not only expands the categorical scope of bacterial α-mannosidases, but also offers new insight into the glycan metabolism of S. canadensis, highlighting the enzyme's utility for glycan analysis and potential biotechnological applications.

The geomicrobiology of limestone, sulfuric acid speleogenetic, and volcanic caves: basic concepts and future perspectives.

Caves are ubiquitous subterranean voids, accounting for a still largely unexplored surface of the Earth underground. Due to the absence of sunlight and physical segregation, caves are naturally colonized by microorganisms that have developed distinctive capabilities to thrive under extreme conditions of darkness and oligotrophy. Here, the microbiomes colonizing three frequently studied cave types, i.e., limestone, sulfuric acid speleogenetic (SAS), and lava tubes among volcanic caves, have comparatively been reviewed. Geological configurations, nutrient availability, and energy flows in caves are key ecological drivers shaping cave microbiomes through photic, twilight, transient, and deep cave zones. Chemoheterotrophic microbial communities, whose sustenance depends on nutrients supplied from outside, are prevalent in limestone and volcanic caves, while elevated inorganic chemical energy is available in SAS caves, enabling primary production through chemolithoautotrophy. The 16S rRNA-based metataxonomic profiles of cave microbiomes were retrieved from previous studies employing the Illumina platform for sequencing the prokaryotic V3-V4 hypervariable region to compare the microbial community structures from different cave systems and environmental samples. Limestone caves and lava tubes are colonized by largely overlapping bacterial phyla, with the prevalence of Pseudomonadota and Actinomycetota, whereas the co-dominance of Pseudomonadota and Campylobacterota members characterizes SAS caves. Most of the metataxonomic profiling data have so far been collected from the twilight and transient zones, while deep cave zones remain elusive, deserving further exploration. Integrative approaches for future geomicrobiology studies are suggested to gain comprehensive insights into the different cave types and zones. This review also poses novel research questions for unveiling the metabolic and genomic capabilities of cave microorganisms, paving the way for their potential biotechnological applications.

Exploring the Antarctic aminopeptidase P from Pseudomonas sp. strain AMS3 through structural analysis and molecular dynamics simulation

Aminopeptidase P (APPro) is a crucial metalloaminopeptidase involved in amino acid cleavage from peptide N-termini, playing essential roles as versatile biocatalysts with applications ranging from pharmaceuticals to industrial processes. Despite acknowledging its potential for catalysis in lower temperatures, detailed molecular basis and biotechnological implications in cold environments are yet to be explored. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the cold-adapted characteristics of APPro from Pseudomonas sp. strain AMS3 (AMS3-APPro) through a detailed analysis of its structure and dynamics. In this study, structure analysis and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of a predicted model of AMS3-APPro has been performed at different temperatures to assess structural flexibility and thermostability across a temperature range of 0–60 °C over 100 ns. The MD simulation results revealed that the structure were able to remain stable at low temperatures. Increased temperatures present a potential threat to the overall stability of AMS3-APPro by disrupting the intricate hydrogen bond networks crucial for maintaining structural integrity, thereby increasing the likelihood of protein unfolding. While the metal binding site at the catalytic core exhibits resilience at higher temperatures, highlighting its local structural integrity, the overall enzyme structure undergoes fluctuations and potential denaturation. This extensive structural instability surpasses the localized stability observed at the metal binding site. Consequently, these assessments offer in-depth understanding of the cold-adapted characteristics of AMS3-APPro, highlighting its capability to uphold its native conformation and stability in low-temperature environments. In summary, this research provides valuable insights into the cold-adapted features of AMS3-APPro, suggesting its efficient operation in low thermal conditions, particularly relevant for potential biotechnological applications in cold environments. De novo assembly and annotation of Popillia japonica’s genome with initial clues to its potential as an invasive pest

BackgroundThe spread of Popillia japonica in non-native areas (USA, Canada, the Azores islands, Italy and Switzerland) poses a significant threat to agriculture and horticulture, as well as to endemic floral biodiversity, entailing that appropriate control measures must be taken to reduce its density and limit its further spread. In this context, the availability of a high quality genomic sequence for the species is liable to foster basic research on the ecology and evolution of the species, as well as on possible biotechnologically-oriented and genetically-informed control measures.ResultsThe genomic sequence presented and described here is an improvement with respect to the available draft sequence in terms of completeness and contiguity, and includes structural and functional annotations. A comparative analysis of gene families of interest, related to the species ecology and potential for polyphagy and adaptability, revealed a contraction of gustatory receptor genes and a paralogous expansion of some subgroups/subfamilies of odorant receptors, ionotropic receptors and cytochrome P450s.ConclusionsThe new genomic sequence as well as the comparative analyses data may provide a clue to explain the staggering invasive potential of the species and may serve to identify targets for potential biotechnological applications aimed at its control.

Potential Biotechnological Applications of Venoms from the Viperidae Family in Central America for Thrombosis.

Central America is home to one of the most abundant herpetofauna in the Americas, occupying only 7% of the continent's total area. Vipers and lizards are among the most relevant venomous animals in medical practice due to the consequences of envenomation from the bite of these animals. A great diversity of biomolecules with immense therapeutic and biotechnological value is contained in their venom. This paper describes the prominent leading representatives of the family Viperidae, emphasizing their morphology, distribution, habitat, feeding, and venom composition, as well as the biotechnological application of some isolated components from the venom of the animals from these families, focusing on molecules with potential anti-thrombotic action. We present the leading protein families that interfere with blood clotting, platelet activity, or the endothelium pro-thrombotic profile. In conclusion, Central America is an endemic region of venomous animals that can provide many molecules for biotechnological applications.

EXPLORING THE SOIL-ASSOCIATED BACTERIAL MICROBIOME OF COFFEE PLANTATIONS IN DIFFERENT REGIONS OF COLOMBIA: A METABARCODING APPROACH

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span lang="EN-US"&gt;Introduction:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;span lang="EN-US"&gt; Coffee is one of the leading tropical crops produced worldwide. Colombia ranks third in coffee production in the world. Microorganisms associated with coffee plants can have many biotechnological applications, such as plant growth promotion and biological control. &lt;strong&gt;Objective:&lt;/strong&gt; To describe the bacteria present in the soil associated with coffee cultivation. This was done using a bulk sequencing or 16S rRNA metabarcoding approach. &lt;strong&gt;Methodology:&lt;/strong&gt; Soil samples were collected to analyze their microbiome from three different departments of Colombia (Cauca, Risaralda and Magdalena). The plants were of different ages, and the crop management was different (conventional and organic). Subsequently, an analysis was carried out using Qiime2 to describe the communities associated with coffee cultivation and soil chemical properties. &lt;strong&gt;Results:&lt;/strong&gt; Some important genera were identified, such as &lt;em&gt;Janthinobacterium&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Bacillus&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Actinomadura&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Actinoallomurus&lt;/em&gt;. These genera can be used as plant growth promoters, organic matter transformers, producers of antibiotics and metabolites with potential biotechnological applications. &lt;strong&gt;Implications:&lt;/strong&gt; The study presented in this manuscript describes the communities associated with the soil in coffee cultivation. However, a much more complex approach could be through metagenomics, where the bacterial communities and the functions of; however, this vision is up to ten times higher in cost. &lt;strong&gt;Conclusion:&lt;/strong&gt; Through the results obtained, it is concluded that the studies carried out through metabarcoding help to understand the composition of the microorganisms associated with coffee and, with this, try to elucidate the functions of the associated microorganisms.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS AND PHARMACOGNOSTIC POTENTIAL OF Tetragonia tetragonioides

In the recent years, due to the increasing resistance of pathogens to synthetic antimicrobial drugs, the use of highly active compounds from plants, which have proven their effectiveness in traditional medicine practices, is increased. Extracts of medicinal plants often contain a unique species ‒ specific combination of active ingredients that have a synergistic therapeutic effect. Therefore, the analysis of the biochemical composition of cultivated plants and the range of their potential biotechnological application is an urgent task. Aim. To summarize the information on the potential of the xerophytic plant Tetragonia tetragonioides as a source of functional food ingredients and biologically active substances that increase nonspecific organism resistance and contribute to the prevention and treatment of various diseases. Results. T. tetragonioides is a salt-tolerant and heat-resistant plant containing valuable nutrients and biologically active substances, a significant amount of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibers. The high level of antioxidant compounds, especially flavonoids and carotenoids, helps to reduce the risk of degenerative pathologies developing associated with excessive oxidative stress. The unique complex of biologically active substances in T. tetragonioides, which includes 6-methoxyflavonols, predominantly derivatives of 6-methoxykaempferol, as well as megastigmanes and their glucosides, lignanamide, provides significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and antimicrobial activity and may be beneficial for the prevention of chronic diseases and age-related health problems. The effectiveness of T. tetragonioides has been demonstrated in animal models in the treatment of metabolic disorders such as obesity, hyperlipidemia, and hyperuricemia. Conclusions. T. tetragonioides, containing a specific complex of biologically active compounds, primarily 6-methoxyflavonols, may be a promising raw material for obtaining effective medications for the treatment and prevention of various chronic diseases and metabolic disorders.

Microbial diversity analysis of Chumathang geothermal spring, Ladakh, India.

In light of their unique and challenging environment, the high-altitude Chumathang geothermal springs in Ladakh, India, are undeniably intriguing for microbiological study. The purpose of this study was to employ a culture-independent sequencing approach to give a comprehensive characterization of the unknown bacterial and archaeal community structure, composition and networks in water and soil from the Chumathang geothermal spring. A total of 50%, and 42.86% bacterial phyla were found in the water, and soil samples respectively and this analysis also showed a total of 9.62% and 7.94% of archaeal phyla in both the samples, respectively. Further, the presence of unclassified (derived from other sequences, water: 17.31%, and soil: 19.05%) and unclassified (derived from bacteria, water: 13.46%, and soil: 12.70%) were also observed in the current metagenomics investigation. Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were the most abundant bacterial phyla in water, whereas Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the most abundant bacterial phyla in geothermal soil. Crenarchaeota and Euryarchaeota dominated archeal communities in soil and water, respectively. This metagenomic study gave a detailed insight into the microbial diversity found in Chumathang geothermal spring and surrounding area, located in Ladakh, India. Surprisingly, this finding indicated the existence of geographically distinct microbial communities that were suited to various geothermal water habitats along the Himalayan Geothermal Belt. Future studies must take into account the metabolic pathways of these microbial communities that exist in these extreme environments. This will allow us to obtain a better knowledge of the microbial metabolisms that are common at these geothermal locations, which have a lot of potential for biotechnological applications. They will also enable us to establish links between the microbial community composition and the physicochemical environment of geothermal water and area.

Electron-Transferring Metalloenzymes and their Potential Biotechnological Applications.

Modern societies rely heavily on centralized industrial processes to generate a multitude of products ranging from electrical energy to synthetic chemical building blocks to construction materials. To date, these processes have relied extensively on energy produced from fossil fuels, which has led to dramatically increased quantities of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide) being released into the atmosphere; the effects of the ensuing change to our climate are easily observed in day-to-day life. Some of the reactions catalyzed by these industrial processes can be catalyzed in nature by metal-containing enzymes (metalloenzymes) that have evolved over the course of up to 3.8 billion years to do so under mild physiological conditions using Earth-abundant metals. While such metalloenzymes could in principle facilitate the implementation of carbon-neutral processes around the globe, either in "bio-inspired" catalyst design or even by direct exploitation, many remaining questions surrounding their mechanisms often preclude both options. Here, our recent efforts in understanding and applying metalloenzymes that catalyze reactions such as dinitrogen reduction to ammonia or proton reduction to molecular hydrogen are discussed. In closing, an opinion on the question: "Can these types of enzymes really be used in new biotechnologies?" is offered.

Carbon nanotubes as neuroprotective agents

Carbon nanotubes, an emerging class of carbon nanomaterials, possess tremendous potential for application in biotechnology and biomedicine particularly in neurological disorders. Carbon nanotubes owing to their fascinating properties have the potential to revolutionize medicine and technology, particularly in the realm of drug delivery, biosensing, bioimaging, and as therapeutic agents to tackle complex neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. In this review, a summary of the use of carbon nanotubes for neuropathological outcomes such as alleviating oxidative stress and amyloid formation, which are well-studied molecular outcomes associated with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. In the end, challenges associated with the clinical testing of carbon nanotubes and possible ways to overcome them are highlighted.
